A fire crew remains at the scene of a blaze at a battery recycling plant near Glasgow four days after it took hold.

Ten appliances were called to the “large-scale” fire at WEEE Solutions Ltd, a specialist waste electrical and battery recycling treatment facility at Burnbrae Road, shortly after 9pm on Sunday.

Local residents were asked to avoid the vicinity and keep windows and doors closed as they reported a chemical smell and the sound of loud explosions.

Images showed a huge plume of smoke stretching over Linwood that could be seen from across Glasgow and beyond.

Four days on, one appliance remains on site working to ensure the area is made safe.

Burnbrae Road, at the Linclive Interchange, has reopened – but motorists are asked to use the road for “essential access” only.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will follow in due course, officials confirmed.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 9.12pm on Sunday, June 23, to reports of a fire in a commercial building in Paisley.

“Operations Control mobilised ten fire appliances to the town’s Burnbrae Road, where firefighters began working to extinguish the fire.

“As of 4.30pm on Thursday, June 26, one fire appliance currently remains on scene with firefighters working to ensure the area is made safe.

“As the incident remains ongoing, any investigation into the fire will follow in due course.”

A police spokesperson said: “Burnbrae Road in Linwood has re-opened following a fire at Linwood Industrial Estate which was reported around 9.10pm on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

“Scottish Fire and Rescue Service continue to deal with the fire. Motorists are asked to use Burnbrae Road for essential access only.”
