A cyclist from West Lothian has suffered multiple fractures after being hit by a car in America.

Josh Quigley was flown to hospital in Texas in an air ambulance, following the collision during his attempt to ride around the world.

In an update on social media, the man from Livingston said: "An ambulance helicopter arrived on the scene and I was flown to the nearest hospital.

"I can’t remember much of what happened, but I can vividly remember hearing the helicopter and being aware that I was in a helicopter."

Mr Quigley said he has suffered fractures in his ankle, heel bone, pelvis, ribs and skull, as well as a pierced lung and an issue with an artery to his brain.

He added: "It’s looking like at least 6-8 weeks before I can walk again or ride a bike. But for now I’m just happy to be alive."

The cyclist, a vocal mental health campaigner after previously trying to take his own life, has credited the sport with giving him "happiness, meaning and purpose".

Speaking about cycling around the world, he added: "I won’t get to finish this year.

"But as always I will find a way to overcome this and finish what I started."
