A Premier League footballer who has represented his country at international level has been arrested on suspicion of rape.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was detained by officers in North London on Monday following the allegation.
The Telegraph reported the player is in his late 20’s and is expected to take part in this year’s World Cup finals in Qatar.
According to the newspaper, the alleged offence is said to have taken place last month. His club is aware of the allegations.
The player was arrested in the Barnet area of North London and is now being questioned by police.
A statement by the Met added: “On July 4, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
“It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022.
“A man has been arrested at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody where he remains.
“Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”
