The world’s first panda-shaped solar power station has been built in China.

Consisting of 170,000 photovoltaic panels, the power station is located in Datong city in northwest China’s Shanxi province.

The power station generates 80 million kwh of solar-powered electricity annually, equal to the total annual electricity consumption of over 30,000 households.

Sun Jingsong, head of the panda-shaped photovoltaic power station said: “Panda is loved by people around the globe.

“By building the power station in the shape of panda, we wanted to call for the protection and care of the environment and the Earth.”

In the 1980s, Datong became China’s “capital of coal” as demands for its rich energy resources took off.

At the same time, over-mining caused heavy pollution and damaged the natural environment.

Now the development of new energy is leading Datong on a greener path.
