The husband of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been “violently assaulted” after their home was broken into.
Paul Pelosi, 82, was taken to hospital following the incident at their San Francisco residence on Friday.
The attacker was taken into custody by authorities in California while an investigation is carried out.
Mr and Mrs Pelosi have been married since 1963.
Drew Hammill, spokesman for Speaker Pelosi, said that she was not at home at the time of the incident.
“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr Pelosi,” he said.
“The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation.
“Mr Pelosi was taken to the hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery. The Speaker was not in San Francisco at the time.
“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved and request privacy at this time.”
Earlier this year, Mr Pelosi – who owns a real estate and venture capital firm – was convicted of driving under the influence and causing injury after crashing his car.
He pleaded guilty in August and was sentenced to five days in jail, but was allowed to serve just one night.
