A 72-year-old woman has been assaulted in a “frightening” attempted robbery in Ayrshire.

Police are looking to trace another woman who grabbed the pensioner and demanded money on Chapelwell Street, Saltcoats.

The incident took place at around 10.40am on Wednesday,

When the victim refused to hand over anything the woman, who is described as being between 35 and 39-years-old and around 5ft5 with a heavy build and dark hair, ran off.

At the time of the incident the suspect was wearing a dark blue three-quarter length jacket with black trousers. 

Detective Constable James Wales, of Ayrshire CID, said: “This was a frightening experience for the victim who luckily did not sustain any injuries. 

“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing to trace the woman responsible. “I am appealing to anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident who may have witnessed what happened, or any motorists who were in the area with dash cam footage, to please come forward.”
