A woman has died in a fatal crash on the M8.

The 49-year-old pedestrian was struck by a white BMW 5 Series car around 7.10pm on Saturday and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision occurred on the motorway near to the slip road for Coatbridge Road near junction eight.

The 41-year-old male driver of the BMW was taken to Monklands Hospital as a precaution.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the road was shut until 2am on Sunday while investigations were carried out.

Sergeant Nicholas Twigg said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who has died and our enquiries to establish the full circumstances of what happened continue.

“We are asking anyone who saw the woman before the crash or saw what happened to get in touch. Anyone with dash-cam footage that could help with our investigation is also asked to contact us.

“Anyone who can assist officers is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2868 of Saturday, November 19.”
