A woman has died following a three-car crash near a golf club in Ayrshire that also left a man seriously injured.

The 72-year-old was driving a blue Volkswagon Golf when it was involved in a collision with a white Vauxhall Corsa and a green Land Rover Discovery.

The incident took place on the A71 in Galston, at around 5.25pm on Saturday.

Emergency services attended the scene near the Loudon Golf Club and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 37-year-old man, the driver of the Corsa, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where his condition is described as serious but stable.

No one else was injured and the road was closed before re-opened again at around 1.30am on Sunday.

Police are now appealing for information to establish the full circumstances.

Sergeant Andrew Coutts said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who died and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have seen what happened to get in touch. Likewise, if you have dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation then make contact with officers.”

Anyone who can help is asked to call Police Scotland on 101.
