The works will see the refurbishment of the copes and parapets on the north approach to the crossing – the new barriers will be designed to modern safety standards.

For the works to be carried out safely, starting eastbound, the road will be closed between 10pm and 6am most nights for around ten weeks from Monday, September 5.

The second phase of the works will involve overnight closures most nights on the westbound side of the bridge, commencing on October 30.

Outwith these times, the bridge will only be open with narrowed lanes while any day shift works are completed.

During the closures, drivers are encouraged to use the M74 and M73.

Signed diversion routes will be in place during the closures.

During the Junction 7 to Junction 6 works, only one carriageway of the M8, eastbound or westbound, will be closed at a time.

Transport Scotland said: “The closures are essential to ensure road user and road worker safety whilst essential bridge maintenance works are undertaken.

“Works have been scheduled overnight to minimise disruption to road users. The road will reopen at 6am each morning.”
