What’s the weather this weekend as Belladrum and Butefest music festivals get under wayFacebook

With music festivals including Belladrum and ButeFest and highlands games set to get under way this weekend, STV weather presenter Philip Petrie looks at what the weather has in store.

Looking ahead to this weekend you would be forgiven for thinking it was an autumn’s weekend rather than a summer’s Saturday and Sunday.

Things are turning unsettled with further showers and stronger winds all to do with low pressure.

It’s not always the case but it’s easy to think that high pressure brings good weather and low pressure brings bad weather.

This weekend we have low pressure dominating our weather pushing in occluded fronts and, in turn, these fronts are bringing showers.

On Saturday, the showers moving in will band together into longer spells of rain, they will be heavy with the odd isolated thunderstorm likely – particularly in western parts.

Along with the showers, it will be feeling quite blustery with some stronger winds blowing the showers through.

This is unfortunate as we have several events taking place this weekend including some highland games such as the Halkirk, Dufftown and St Andrews games, also Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival and ButeFest.

To those attending any of these events, it’s always best to plan ahead and, unfortunately, be prepared and bring waterproofs and wellies.

Things remain unsettled into Sunday but this time we are sat directly under the centre of the low pressure system which means light winds.

Unfortunately, this means that the showers coming on Sunday will be heavy and slow moving because we don’t have the strength of the winds to blow them through.

There’s no sign at the moment of things settling down any time soon and it looks like the unseasonable conditions will continue well into August.
