Two people have been taken to hospital after a gas explosion tore through a house in North Lanarkshire.

Police and fire crews were called to the property on Cedars Grove, Bargreddie, near Coatbridge, around 6.25am on Sunday.

The residents of the house were rescued and taken to to University Hospital Monklands.

A 43-year-old man received treatment and has since been discharged.

A 39-year-old woman has been transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary with serious injuries as a result of the blast.

Residents from neighbouring homes have been evacuated as a precaution.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed the incident and said officers remain at the scene.
