Thousands to march through Glasgow as 34 Orange Walks planned

Thousands of people are expected to march through Glasgow in one day next month with 34 Orange Walks planned.

The marches, planned by lodges throughout the city, will take place on Saturday, September 18.

It comes after the traditional annual Boyne celebrations usually held in July were cancelled two years running due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But with the majority of restrictions now lifted the groups have decided to congregate and march through the city in large numbers.

Around 4000 people are expected to take part with one lodge alone, the County Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow South, saying 1850 of their members will join their march from Clyde Place Quay to Glasgow Green.

Other organisations taking part include The Maryhill Orange and Purple District 46, The Greater Easterhouse Truth Defenders L.O.L District No 17, The Loyal Orange Institution Govan District 42 and The Parkhead Bluebell L.O.L 129.

Each of the 34 marches, meeting at several locations throughout the city, range from around 65 to just under 2000 members taking part.

Two colour processions will also be held in the morning and afternoon.

Glasgow Green will be the main location for the marchers to congregate with Kelvingrove Park and several other city centre locations also being used.

The earliest marches will begin at 8.30am with others running well into the afternoon.

Three parades have also been planned for the weekend of September 11, with around 770 members from Drumchapel Purple and Orange District, Pride of Govan FB and Springburn Campsie ABOD taking part.
