Scottish SPCA appeal after Glasgow vet finds rat abandoned in plastic box near bins amid heatwave Scottish SPCA

An appeal for information has been made after a domesticated rat was found abandoned in a plastic container in Glasgow.

The Scottish SPCA received a call after the animal was found near some bins in the Tollcross area on June 12.

The white and light brown female rat was assessed by vets, and had a growth on her face.

Scottish SPCA inspector Sian Robertson said: “This would have been a very distressing experience for the animal and she was lucky to have been found when she was, especially in this hot weather in a plastic box.”

“She is now safe in the care of one of our animal rescue and rehoming centres,” she continued.

“We know times are tough for a lot of people at the moment, but this is not the way to give up a pet if you can no longer care for them.”

It comes days after the charity announced plans to expand its Pet Aid service to help struggling owners with vet bills.

“The human-animal bond is important, and nobody should have to give up their pet because they are unable to afford the cost of basic veterinary care,” Ms Robertson added.

Anyone with information about the rat or struggling to care for their pet can call the Scottish SPCA’s animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
