Scotland’s only underwater sniffer dog has died after dedicating more than a decade bringing closure to families with missing loved ones.
Springer spaniel Barra spent 11 years helping to find bodies in the River Clyde before retiring from duty in 2022.
His owner Iain Marshall announced with “great sadness” that Barra had been put to sleep after a short illness.
Barra was originally born in Wales before finding his forever home in Dumbarton where his talent as a victim recovery dog was discovered.
He qualified as Scotland’s first underwater sniffer dog leading to the creation of K9 Search & Recovery Scotland.
Iain, a Coastguard volunteer, and Barra received calls from police and coastguards all over the country to help in the search for missing people.
K9 Search & Recovery ScotlandPosting on social media, Iain said: “Words cannot describe the pain I feel at the moment, but I know deep down it was the right decision for Barra.
“Barra devoted his entire life to helping others right up to the age of 13 years which is remarkable in itself.
“I would like to thank each and every one of you for the support you have given us over those years to which I’m very grateful for.
“Barra and I had such a special bond together and I can’t imagine life without him anymore.
“I would also like to thank Rachel and everyone at Mackenzie vets for the care and compassion Barra received over the years, I’m forever grateful to each and every one of you.
“Rest easy Barra till we meet again and thank you for your service and being the best friend I ever had.”
