A man who crossed the Irish Sea on a jet ski from Scotland to the Isle of Man has been jailed after breaching Covid-19 regulations.

Dale McLaughlan, from Irvine, made the journey on Friday, despite the island banning visitors unless they have been given special permission to enter in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.

At Douglas Courthouse, the 28-year-old pled guilty to failing to comply with Covid-19 regulations.

He was jailed on the island for four weeks.

The Isle of Man Examiner reported McLaughlan had purchased the jet ski and towed it 70 miles from his home in Irvine to a beach on the Isle of Whithorn.

The paper said he had travelled to the island to meet his girlfriend, who he had met previously while working on the Isle of Man.

It reportedly took McLaughlan four and a half hours to cross the Irish Sea on the jet ski due to poor weather.
