A supermarket has been evacuated following reports a woman was stabbed inside the store.

Shoppers were ushered towards the exit at the Tesco superstore in Rutherglen shortly after 1.30pm after emergency crews rushed to the scene.

A 25-year-old woman was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment, where her condition is unknown.

Meanwhile a 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Eyewitnesses told how “multiple” police officers and at least one ambulance crew were seen entering the store as those browsing the aisles were encouraged to leave after staff activated the fire alarm.

Tesco has been contacted for comment.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to a serious assault at a premises on Dalmarnock Road, Rutherglen at around 1.30pm on Saturday, July 9.

“A 25-year-old woman was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection.”
