Pensioner injured after home robbed by bogus workman

An 87-year-old man needed hospital treatment after he was attacked and robbed in his own home in South Lanarkshire by someone pretending to be a workman.

A man entered the property in Lorne Street, Hamilton, on Monday afternoon and assaulted the pensioner, who fell to the ground.

The suspect stole several pieces of jewellery, which had “great sentimental value”, then ran off.

The victim was taken to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride for treatment and has since been released.

Police are appealing for information about the incident which happened between midday and 2.45pm.

Detective constable Paul Mooney said:  “An elderly man has been assaulted within his home and has had items of great sentimental value stolen from him.

“I am appealing to local residents within the area to think back and consider if they noticed anyone or anything suspicious between midday and 2.45pm yesterday.

“This man may have attempted to gain entry to other properties.  I would ask anyone with any information to contact us.”

Officers said their investigations so far have revealed the man pretended to be a workman when he was confronted by the householder.

Officers are carrying out door-to-door inquiries and are checking CCTV footage from in and around the area as part of their investigations.

If you have any information, all 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
