The death of a man whose burned body was discovered near a football pitch in North Lanarkshire is being treated as “unexplained”.

The burned human remains were found in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell around 9am on Saturday.

Police sealed off the area and a white tent was erected on a football pitch at the scene as forensic staff carried out investigations.

On Saturday evening, police confirmed the remains were that of a man’s.

Police said the man’s death is being treated as “unexplained”.

Members of the public have been urged to come forward if they have any information regarding the man’s death.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9am on Saturday, February 24, 2024 the body of a man was discovered in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell. 

“His death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are at an early stage to establish the full circumstances.

“Officers remain at the scene and anyone with information or concerns can speak to them. Alternatively, call 101 quoting reference 0923 of February 24.”
