A man has been left seriously injured after he was attacked during the night at a house in Ayrshire.
The victim was at an address on Kerrmuir Avenue in Hurlford when the incident took place at around 1.35am on Monday.
Two men dressed in dark clothing attended the house and assaulted the man, leaving him requiring hospital treatment.
Emergency services attended and he was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where he remains.
Medical staff have described his condition as serious.
After the attack the suspects ran off into the street towards Cessnock Avenue.
Police are treating it as a targeted attack and say enquiries are ongoing.
Detective Constable Ross Brierley, East Ayrshire CID, said: “Although we believe that this was a targeted attack, a man is in a serious condition in hospital and we have to trace those responsible.
“Kerrmuir Avenue is overseen by a number of houses and I am sure, even though it was early in the morning, that someone will have seen or heard the disturbance or something suspicious.”
