A man has died in hospital two days after an assault in a seaside town in North Ayrshire.

Police were alerted to reports of a man being assaulted on New England Road in Saltcoats on Sunday, February 4.

A 36-year-old man was taken to hospital following the incident but died on Tuesday.

Police say the man’s death is being treated as unexplained as enquiries remain ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers are investigating the death of a man following a report of an assault on New England Road, Saltcoats on Sunday, February 4. 

“The 36-year-old man died in hospital on Tuesday, February 6.

“His death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.” 

The Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
