Man charged after 'suspicious items' found during police raid on Glasgow flat

A man has been arrested and charged after “suspicious items” were found during a pre-planned police raid at a property in Glasgow

Police were called to Broomhill Drive in the city’s West End on Thursday with the road between Dumbarton Road and Broomhill Avenue near Thornwood cordoned off.

Residents were evacuated from their homes and the Royal Navy bomb squad were called to the scene, with personnel in hazmat suits seen entering a property with a cordon put in place.

Police have now confirmed a 50-year-old man has been arrested and charged after “suspicious items” were found during the pre-planned search.

He is due to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday, February 16.

Police say Broomhill Drive has now reopened but a small number of properties remain evacuated.

A Police Scotland statement read: “The majority of residents have been allowed back into their homes however a small number of properties remain evacuated and a cordon is in place as a precaution.”

Glasgow City Council confirmed evacuated residents made use of a rest centre at Partick Burgh Hall on Thursday evening.

Another emergency centre will be set up in Partick for residents still not in their homes.

A council spokeswoman said: “26 residents visited our rest centre set up in Partick Burgh Hall last night. Three were provided with emergency accommodation whilst the others made alternative arrangements.

“An emergency rest centre will be setup at our Partick Social Workoffice (35 Church Street, Glasgow, G11 5JT) this morning where displaced residents will be supported by Health and Social Care Partnership officers.

“We will continue to liaise with Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and will respond to any developments appropriately.”
