A 37-year-old man has appeared at court charged with “sexual assault with intent to rape” a 70-year-old woman.

Police Scotland announced on Saturday that it had arrested a man following an alleged sexual assault of a woman near Colquhoun Park and Station Road in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire on Friday, March 22.

They said the woman was walking near the busy park just after 5pm when she was knocked to the ground and sexually assaulted.

A manhunt was launched before he was found and charged.

Martin Hackett, of Glasgow, submitted no plea or declaration when he appeared before Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Saturday.

He will be remanded in custody until his next court appearance in eight days.
