M8 Kingston Bridge in Glasgow to be closed overnight for ten weeks  GCC

The Kingston Bridge in Glasgow will be closed overnight for 10 weeks as safety railings on the M8 are replaced.

The works will see the refurbishment of the copes and parapets on the north approach to the crossing – the new barriers will be designed to modern safety standards.

Balfour Beatty, working on behalf of Transport Scotland, began works on Monday, August 29, before closures are put in place.

For the works to be carried out safely, starting eastbound, the road will be closed between 10pm and 6am most nights for around ten weeks from September 5.

The second phase of the works will involve overnight closures most nights on the westbound side of the bridge, commencing on October 30.

Outwith these times, the bridge will only be open with narrowed lanes while any day shift works are completed.

During the eastbound closures, traffic heading to Edinburgh and the Lothians are encouraged to use the M74 and M73.

During the westbound closures, those travelling west of Glasgow are encouraged to use the same alternative motorways.

Balfour Beatty said closures would be re-scheduled where local events are planned that are likely to cause significant disruption and access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

The works are also weather-dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled at short notice if conditions are “not favourable”.

The overall project is not scheduled to be completed until February 2023.

“Closures are required for these works to create enough working space to safely complete the demolition and removal of the existing copes and parapets, manage delivery of materials to the work site and install replacement copes and parapets,” Balfour Beatty said.

The Kingston Bridge works come on top of resurfacing by BEAR Scotland.

The eastbound carriageway of the M8 will be closed between Junction 3A and Junction 3 starting on Tuesday, August 30, for six nights between 8.30pm and 6am, each night.

Phase two of the work will see the M8 westbound carriageway between Junction 6 Newhouse and Junction 7 Eurocentral closed for 19 nights, from 8pm on the days below to 6am the following days:

  • Wednesday September 14 to Friday September 16
  • Sunday September 18
  • Monday September 19 to Thursday September 22
  • Tuesday September 27 to Friday September 30
  • Sunday October 2 to Friday October 7
  • Sunday October 9
