A lorry driver has been sentenced to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work for causing the death of a cyclist in Glasgow.

Emma Burke Newman was killed after being involved in a collision with an HGV at a set of traffic lights on Broomielaw on January 27, 2023.

The 22-year-old was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital following the incident but died a short time later.

Paul Mowat, 69, pled guilty of causing death by careless driving at Glasgow Sheriff Court in February.

He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing on Thursday where he was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work in the community – reduced from 150 hours due to his early guilty plea.

He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and also handed a 12 month supervision order.
