John Higgins in court charged with murder of Amanda McAlear found dead in Glasgow Police Scotland

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of 50-year-old Amanda McAlear in Glasgow.

John Higgins, 62, made no plea at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody.

Ms McAlear was found with a number of serious injuries at a property on Rye Road, in the Barmulloch area, on Sunday, May 8.

Police officers attended at around 12.10pm and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Higgins is expected to appear at court again within the next eight days.

In a statement, Ms McAlear’s family said: “Amanda was a much loved mother, daughter and sister who will be sorely missed.”

Detective chief inspector Frank Travers of Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team said: “Our thoughts remain with Amanda’s family at what continues to be a difficult time for them.

“Our enquiries indicate that this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no risk to the wider community.

“I would also like to thank the local community for their patience, help and assistance during our investigation and to those who came forward with information.”
