Bosses at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow have scrapped their £1 plastic cup return scheme.
In a statement posted on their website, the concert venue announced that they have made the decision to “streamline” the drink buying process for customers.
The initiative originally saw customers raking in £1 every time they handed back a plastic cup at the end of a gig in an attempt to encourage sustainability.
Despite there being a limit of six cups per person, the programme led to a stampede of music fans hunting for plastic cups once curtains closed, then lining up to pocket cash for each cup handed in.
The venue says there will still be recycling points specifically for dropping off reusable cups and urged customers to “do their bit for the environment” by using them.
The statement on their website said: “We have removed our £1 deposit to make the process of buying a drink and returning your cup more streamlined for everyone and hope you will support us on this new venture.
“Thank you for supporting our sustainability journey by leaving your cup at the OVO Hydro.”
