A funeral service will be held on Wednesday for a young football fan who was killed in a bus crash in East Ayrshire.

Gordon Stirling, 23, was injured when the single-decker Stagecoach bus he was driving collided with a white Ford Transit van on the A77 last month.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with life-threatening injuries and died five days later on August 19.

Police Scotland treated Mr Stirling’s death as murder. The 42-year-old van driver involved in the collision has since been arrested in connection with the crash.

Mr Stirling supported Kilmarnock and the club asked fans attending their Premiership match against Motherwell at Fir Park last month to pay tribute to him.

In a statement, the club said: “Everyone at the club sends their deepest condolences to Gordon’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”
