Firefighters battle flames as blaze rips through 'landmark' former pub

Firefighters are at the building of a former pub in Motherwell after a blaze broke out on Sunday.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews rushed to the building of the former Bullfrog Bar and Lounge on Shields Road on Sunday at around 3.48pm.

A spokesperson said that four appliances had been dispatched, and were still at the scene.

It is currently unknown if there have been any injuries as a result.

Images and footage on social media appear to show huge clouds of smoke billowing from the roof of the building as crews attempt to extinguish the flames.

It was announced in November last year that the landmark establishment was due to close over rising costs.

In a statement at the time, owners wrote: “Our time is just about up, l’m afraid. We have to close the doors as we can no longer compete with energy costs spiralling out of control.”

“We had hoped to continue to trade until a buyer for the business, or building, had been found but alas we just cannot afford the electricity costs,” they added.
