Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened on the A78 on Wednesday.

An elderly man is fighting for his life after his van overturned in Ayrshire.

The incident took place at around 11.30am on Wednesday on the A78 at the Eglinton interchange in Irvine.

The 71-year-old man, who was behind the wheel of a Ford Transmit Connect, was driving southbound on the off-slip when he crashed and the van overturned.

Emergency services attended and the man was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries.

Hospital staff describe his condition as serious.

Sergeant Chris Hoggans from the Road Policing Unit said: “Since this crash took place we have been carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the collision and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or has dash cam footage to contact the Road Policing Unit at Irvine through 101 quoting reference 1022 of 12 January.”
