A dancing Christmas tree who went viral after videos of her boogying on the streets of Glasgow were beamed around the world has said she is hanging up her tinsel for good.
Kate Deeming, who has an extensive collection of costumes from chickens to Christmas trees, has been raising spirits on the streets for the last three years – gaining her international acclaim.
She told STV News: “I wasn’t even in the chicken costume and this guy swerved his car over and said you’re the disco chicken! You’re really famous in Pakistan!”
Videos of Kate have gone viral on social media, and she’s raised thousands of pounds for charity. She even broke America.
“I’d be dancing around and unbeknownst to me this video was created out the window, and that was kinda the beginning of it,” she explained.
“But actually what was most important about is that it was creating positive experiences on the street.”
Kate’s been a familiar face in Glasgow for more than a decade now, but says the time’s come to hang up her tinsel, and sell her 18 costumes.
She said: “It was a joyous experience and I loved doing it but I think it was the end of this particular project…and I need a break,” she explained.
“I feel like someone else needs to become the custodian of this story because it built something really beautiful – something important to hang on to.”
After years of getting spruced up and dancing for hours on end, the only gift Kate’s hoping to get from Santa this year is a chance to put her feet up.
“I’m really hoping someone wants to buy the collection, because I do think it really represents a really important part of Glasgow’s social history and civic history,” she added.
