North Lanarkshire Council has appointed a contractor to build a new cemetery in Wishaw.

The council will pay Tilbury Douglas £3.7m to construct a replacement for the existing Cambusnethan Cemetery at Pather Farm.

The council has been working on this project since 2019 and the new site, which already has planning permission, is expected to provide burial capacity for around 20 years.

The construction contract was put out to tender and five companies submitted bids, with the Tilbury Douglas offer deemed to be the most economically advantageous.

Construction of the new cemetery will begin in the summer and is due to be completed by Spring 2025, more than a year before Cambusnethan Cemetery is expected to run out of space.

The council is also working on plans to expand its cemeteries at Coltswood and New Monklands.
