Celtic star Alexandro Bernabei has been charged over an alleged drink-driving incident in the centre of Glasgow.

The 21-year-old Argentine, who joined the club from Lanus in June for a £3.75m fee, was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning in connection with a “road traffic offence”.

It came just hours after the defender was an unused substitute in Celtic’s 5-0 defeat of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon.

Bernabei, a youth international for his country, is yet to play a competitive game for the Premiership champions.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Monday, August 15, a 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with a road traffic offence which took place in Glasgow City Centre.

“He has been released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.”
