Care worker struck off after 'repeatedly punching' vulnerable resident at Olympia Care Home in Glasgow

A care worker has been struck off after “repeatedly punching” a resident in Glasgow.

John McCallion was convicted at Glasgow Sheriff Court after assaulting a care home resident in March 2023.

He was working as a support worker at Olympia Care Home in Glasgow when he was found to have assaulted a resident.

During McCallion’s employment he was found to have grabbed the resident by the legs and “repeatedly” punched them on the body.

Following the conviction, the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) found McCallion’s fitness to practice to be “impaired” and removed him from their register.

The watchdog said that the care worker was having difficulty with the residents needs and behaviours when the incident happened.

“Instead of leaving the room and/or seeking assistance from a colleague, you took matters into your own hands and physically assaulted the resident,” the report said.

They added that while McCallion expressed “remorse” his actions amounted to a fundamental failing.

On the support worker’s removal from the register, the SSSC, said: “The SSSC considers a Removal Order is the most appropriate sanction as it is both necessary and justified in the public interest and to maintain the continuing trust and confidence in the social service profession and the SSSC as the regulator of the profession.”

A spokesperson for Olympia Care Home said: “When the incident occurred we suspended John McCallion pending internal investigation which resulted in immediate dismissal and referral to police Scotland and SSSC.”
