A Scots grandfather who won £1m on the EuroMillions lottery tearfully broke the news to his wife by saying: "Hen, we're millionaires".

Arthur and Emma Howard, from East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire, won £1m on Friday's raffle.

Taxi driver Mr Howard, 73, has now handed in his notice.

The couple's son Allan told the East Kilbride News how his father broke the news to his wife when she returned from shopping.

He said: "My mum was puzzled when she came home and saw everyone at the windows.

"She had no idea what was going on. My dad took her hand and, through tears, said, 'Hen, we’re millionaires.’

"It’s without a doubt the happiest time of our lives.

"My mum and dad aren’t drinkers but the champagne came out after that."

The lottery winner normally buys five lines at his local shop every Friday and Saturday.

Allan added: "It was only when he went to the shop the next day to get his ticket checked that the sales girl told him he’d won the millionaire raffle."

The couple have yet to decide how they will spend their winnings but a holiday in Dubai is in the pipeline.
