A shopkeeper shot in the leg during an attempted robbery in Glasgow is set to undergo surgery.

The 23-year-old was targeted at KOF Convenience Store in the Yoker area of the city on Sunday.

The robber entered the Dumbarton Road shop at around 11.20am carrying what is believed to have been a handgun.

He demanded money and cigarettes before shooting the shopkeeper in the leg and fleeing empty-handed.

The 23-year-old's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening but he is set to undergo surgery on Monday at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "The shopkeeper is undergoing surgery at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital today and he remains in a stable condition."

The shooter, who had covered his face, was described as around 5ft 8in tall white man with a thin build.

He was wearing a black hooded jacket, black tracksuit trousers and fled along Dumbarton Road towards Clydebank.

Detective inspector Brian Gallacher, who is leading the investigation into the shooting, said: "For someone to discharge a firearm over cash and cigarettes from a corner shop is just deplorable.

"One person injured is bad enough but this could have involved others – including children who could have been in the shop at the time.

“Officers are currently carrying out door to door enquiries and checking CCTV in an effort to trace this man who obviously has no concern for either staff in the shop or the general public.

“We are still trying to establish whether the suspect made off on foot or had a car nearby.

“The shop is near to a busy road and at this time there may have been a few people about.

"It’s possible the suspect had been hanging about the area prior to the incident, so if you have seen him or have any information that will help us with our enquiries, it is important that you contact police.

“Additional uniformed patrols are in the area, please speak to them if you have any information to give.

"Alternatively, please call Drumchapel police office via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.”
