Motorists are being advised to avoid the M74 southbound as major delays are expected due to a pothole.

One lane remains closed for emergency repairs near junction five and the southbound carriageway will close completely from 10pm on Tuesday evening to allow the work to continue.

Traffic will be diverted off the motorway and returned to the M74 via the southbound slip road at junction five.

Preparations are under way for emergency repairs to allow two lanes to reopen to traffic before tomorrow's morning peak.

An overnight closure of the road will be in effect from 10pm on Tuesday until 6am on Wednesday, January 20.

Following consultation with Police Scotland and the operating company, Amey, lane one will remain closed to traffic to ensure the safety of road users, with one lane continuing to operate in the southbound direction.

The M74 northbound remains unaffected.

The pothole has developed due to the recent adverse weather conditions and high volumes of traffic.
