A £40,000 cannabis haul was discovered by police after they stopped a car on a motorway.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the recovery after a car was stopped on a motorway near Lockerbie on Wednesday afternoon.

Traffic police stopped the vehicle on the A74(M) at Eaglesfield at 4.20pm before searching the car and finding a haul of what is believed to be herbal cannabis.

A 36-year-old man and another man, aged 38, are expected to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court on Friday.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "Drugs with an estimated and potential street value of £40 000 have been seized by traffic police from Lockerbie Trunk Road Patrol Group.

"At around 4.20pm hours on Wednesday, officers stopped a car on the A74(M) near junction 20, Eaglesfield and discovered the drugs, believed to be herbal cannabis.

"Two men, aged 38 and 36, have been arrested and are presently detained in police custody in connection with the find. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
