‘Loneliness is terrible… the silence can be so powerful’

Retired naval officer George Mudie's life has been transformed by a day-care centre.

A pensioner’s life has been transformed by a day-care centre – but the coronavirus pandemic means he and others who rely on them can’t go.

Retired naval officer George Mudie, 94, has lived alone since his wife Mary died five years ago.

He’s started attending Mid-lin Day Care Centre in Dundee and told STV News it had given him a lifeline.

However, all such centres are currently closed, leaving George and others like him at risk of isolation.

George said: “Loneliness is a terrible thing, so it is, sometimes the silence can be so powerful.

“There’s always something happening at Mid-lin.

“It’s definitely serving the community, It’s very entertaining you know, and the people look after you really well.”
