Rangers have submitted an appeal against the red card shown to Dujon Sterling in his side’s 2-1 win over Aberdeen.
Sterling was sent off by referee Don Robertson for a challenge on Jack Mackenzie late in the second half of the game at Ibrox.
The VAR officials invited Robertson to review his decision but, after watching replays on the pitchside monitor, the referee stuck by his original decision of serious foul play and dismissed Sterling.
An SFA-convened independent panel will now hear the case on Thursday and if Rangers are successful the player will be free to play against Ayr United in the Scottish Cup this weekend.
Speaking at full-time on Tuesday night, Rangers boss Philippe Clement had said that his initial reaction was that the red card was harsh but that he would consult others before making a call on an appeal.
“That’s something we need to decide as a club,” Clement said. “I never make these decisions alone. It was a harsh decision for me. Dujon slipped and he hits the toes of the opponent.
“I didn’t see until now many red cards that you touch the opponent at his toes. If I look back, I cannot remember one moment.”
