Livingston and wrestling duo The Hardy Boyz spark bizarre online rivalry

Livingston Football Club have become entangled with wrestling stars The Hardy Boyz in a surprising online spat.

The Premiership club tweeted praise for their midfield players Stephane Omeonga and Jason Holt following the 2-0 win over Dundee on Tuesday, and compared the pair to the famous tag-team.

Unexpectedly, Matt Hardy spotted the untagged message and shared it with his 1.4 million followers, asking: “Better than the greatest tag team in all of space and time?”, adding a gif of him and brother Jeff laughing.

To the delight of fans of Scottish football and professional wrestling, the exchange didn’t end there.

Livingston stoked the flames by posting a picture of some of their players in wrestling outfits on the pitch at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

And that provoked another response from Matt Hardy, who replied with a challenge, asking: “A handicap match – Hardy Boyz v @LiviOfficial? LFG!!”.

The Hardy Boyz began pro wrestling in the early 90s and became stars of WWF (now WWE) later that decade.

After splitting up their partnership in 2002, the real-life brothers have reunited on several occasions and recently announced that they will return to the ring in March.

That match will mark their return to action for the first time since they retained their SmackDown Tag Team titles in 2019.

Livingston are currently in eighth place in the Premiership table.
