Hibernian stalwart Lewis Stevenson has inked a new one-year deal with Easter Road club.

The 35-year-old became Hibs’ all-time league appearance holder earlier this season and moved into the top four for appearances across all competitions with 572 in green and white.

The Kirkcaldy-born full back, who is the only player in the club’s history to win both the League and Scottish Cups, netted his tenth goal for the Leith outfit in the 1-1 draw with St Johnstone that secured their place in the Premiership’s top six last month.

His contract was due to expire at the end of the campaign but the extension will take him into his 19th season with the side.

The Scotland cap said he was desperate to finish his career at Easter Road, but insisted he is yet to entertain any thoughts of hanging up his boots just yet.

“Everyone knows how much Hibs means to me and I’d like to play here for the rest of my career,” he said.

“I feel pretty good, there are little things I can’t do that I did ten years ago, but I still feel good physically, and feel like I can help the team both on and off the pitch.

“I never imagined I’d go on to make as many appearances for Hibs as I have, but I want to keep working hard, playing, and have more success here.”

Stevenson made his debut as a 17-year-old in a 2-1 League Cup victory over Ayr United in 2005 and has played under 13 permanent managers since then.

His current boss, Lee Johnson, praised the defender’s longevity, adding he was “delighted” to sign him up for at least another year.

“In this modern day and age, it’s not often you have a player that shows the kind of loyalty Lewy has to Hibs,” he said.

“He has rightly written his name into the club’s history books and I think everyone can see that he’s still going strong.

“He’s really humble, a fantastic human-being, and is exactly the type of person we want at this football club, so we’re delighted that he will stay with us for another year.”

Hibs will resume their chase for European football with a trip to Aberdeen on Saturday.
