David Gray was delighted to see Hibernian striker Dylan Vente kick off his season with a hat-trick in Saturday’s 5-0 Premier Sports Cup group-stage triumph over Elgin City.
The Hibees eased to victory at Borough Briggs in Gray’s first game since being appointed permanent manager last month.
Vente scored a first-half double and then added the fifth after a debut goal from Marvin Ekpiteta and a Martin Boyle goal.
“Three goals is exactly what every striker wants, they want to be scoring goals,” Gray told BBC Scotland.
“To get off the mark on day one is excellent for him. With his movement, he deserved his goals.
“We know he’s a good finisher, we just need to make sure we give him the opportunities to get the best out of him. I’m delighted for him but I’m delighted for the whole team. I thought everybody played well.”
Gray felt his team produced a “professional” display against their League Two opponents.
“Elgin caused us a couple of issues in the first half but we managed to fix that and we really took control of the game in the second half,” he said.
“It was a good collective team performance.”
