Celtic have been knocked out of Champions League qualifying after losing 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate) to FC Midtjylland after extra time.

With the tie balanced at 1-1 after the first leg in Glasgow last week, Celtic took the lead early in the second half in Denmark. Callum McGregor scored with a smartly-hit volley after a corner had been headed clear.

Midtjylland levelled the tie just after the hour mark, just after James Forrest had narrowly missed with a chance to double Celtic’s advantage, moving up the field and working the ball into the box where Awer Mabil headed beyond Scott Bain.

Neither side could find a winner in regulation time, and an extra 30 minutes was needed to settle the tie. Four minutes after the restart, Celtic failed to properly clear a free-kick and Raphael Onyedika had space in the box to lash a shot high into the net.

Celtic couldn’t muster a response and drop out of the premier competition, taking a place in the Europa League third qualifying round, where they will face Czech side FK Jablonec.
