Dundee United keeper Eiji Kawashima hopes to make a similar impact on Scottish football to his countryman Shunsuke Nakamura.

The Japanese international was unveiled to the media at Tannadice, marking the end of a drawn-out process to secure his signature.

Kawashima had to wait almost two months for his international clearance to be passed but eventually made his debut in the 2-1 derby defeat on Saturday.

He remembers the coverage former Celtic playmaker Nakamura received back home during 2005-2009 when he became a fans' favourite in the east end of Glasgow.

"The time Nakamura used to play in Scotland, he used to play against Dundee United of course," said Kawashima, who has signed until the summer.

"Not only myself but all Japanese people know that Nakamura did really well at Celtic.

"Everyone remembers how much Nakamura did in Scotland so I will try to do my best, like he did here."

The keeper continued by assessing his initial reactions to his new surroundings, saying: "I didn't have images before but after I arrived in Scotland, I found people are nice.

"This week the weather is not very nice but the country is really beautiful. I see the colours even in winter so I got a good impression."
