Spitfire continues hospital flyover to thank NHS workers

The plane is embarking on a journey that will see it fly over 98 hospitals including 25 in Scotland.

A Spitfire plane has been flying above hospitals across Scotland to thank NHS staff for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

The plane took off from Duxfield Airport in Cambridgeshire at 10am on Wednesday morning, embarking on a journey that will see it fly over 98 hospitals including 25 in Scotland.

The words ‘THANK U NHS’ have been hand-written on the plane, which is owned by the Aircraft Restoration Company.

The company plan to hand write 80,000 names onto the plane over the next year, allowing the public to nominate names of loved ones to raise money for NHS charities Together.

The Spitfire landed at Cumbernauld Airport on Wednesday afternoon following its journey across Annan Hospital and Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary.

Taking off from Cumbernauld Airport, the plane continued its flyover on Thursday morning at 10am, passing over 14 hospitals before landing at Inverness Airport at 11:30am.

The Spitfire didn’t stop for long, returning to the air to continue its journey over the remaining nine hospitals on the route back to Cumbernauld Airport and finally landing by 2.25pm.
