How the Empire Biscuit explains the rising cost of living

McGhee’s Bakery boss explains why the price of the cherished sweet treat has soared.

Everyone loves an Empire Biscuit, don’t they? But like everything else, it’s getting more expensive.

Flour, sugar and vegetable margarine is all dearer than it used to be – and baker Ian McGhee certainly doesn’t want to ditch the cherished jelly tot to slash costs.

The average price of the tasty treat is now 42.7p – up from 37.1p this time last year.

As part of our series looking at the soaring cost of living, we asked Ian – production director at McGhee’s Bakery – to explain the soaring price.
