What changes for passengers when ScotRail is nationalised?

Your questions answered as a new public body prepares to take over Scotland's train services.

ScotRail is being nationalised by Scottish Government, so how are passengers affected? iStock

Scotland’s train services will be run by a new public sector body from Friday.

Dutch firm Abellio’s seven-year stint in charge of ScotRail will end early as a Scottish Government ‘arms-length’ company takes over.

But what will the switch mean for the operator and passengers?

Who will run ScotRail?

Abellio had its contract ended early amid criticism over the number of cancellations and delays.

A new company called ScotRail Trains Limited will run services from April 1, overseen by Scottish Rail Holdings Ltd, a new public body controlled by the Scottish Government.

Rail services in Scotland will, however, continue to be known as ‘ScotRail’ and all staff will be transferred over to the new organisation

The RMT union will hold a day of action outside Glasgow Queen Street station on Friday calling for “a properly funded rail operator that delivers for passengers, communities and workers”.

Will the trains look different?

All trains and stations will keep the ‘ScotRail’ branding, however the name of ‘Abellio’ will be removed from all signs.

There are no changes on board, including for cyclists, who can still bring their bikes.

Are tickets still valid?

Tickets bought in advance and season tickets will all remain valid and there is no need to update your personal details online to get compensation for late and cancelled trains.

And if you’ve booked assistance getting on and off trains, that will not be affected.

Will the timetables change?

There are currently no plans to change the timetables, ScotRail says. All schedules will remain as planned.
