Fergus Ewing will be represented by one of Scotland’s top lawyers during an SNP disciplinary hearing that could see him suspended from the party for a week.
STV News understands that the Inverness and Nairn MSP will bring John Campbell KC along to the internal party hearing.
The SNP will decide on Wednesday evening whether the rebel politician will face sanctions after he voted to oust a Scottish Government minister earlier this year.
Ewing joined the Tories in a motion calling for Green circular economy minister Lorna Slater to resign.
He has been a frequent critic of the Greens, previously labelling them “wine bar revolutionaries”.
He has also criticised his own party over the new short-term lets licensing scheme, the deposit return scheme, highly protected marine areas and gender reforms.
Campbell, who is said to be representing Ewing on Wednesday, was previously counsel for the Holyrood Inquiry which investigated the overspending involved in building the Scottish Parliament.
