Voter registration for May's Scottish Parliament election will close on April 18. It will be the first ever Holyrood election where 16 and 17 year olds can vote, after the franchise was extended in Scotland for local and Scottish parliamentary elections last year. The Scottish Parliament election will be held on Thursday May 5, 2016, along with local elections in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the London mayoral election. With the recent change to a system of individual electoral registration - as opposed to the old system of one person per household - thousands of people in Scotland have fallen off the electoral register, with many possibly unaware that they are no longer registered. The deadline to register to vote is Monday April 18, and you can do so at www.registertovote.scot. You may need to have your National Insurance number or a valid UK passport to hand. You can also update your name, address or other details on the electoral register, choose whether to vote in person or by post, or change whether you appear on the electoral roll. You can also register to vote by post by choosing one of the options here and sending the completed form to your local electoral registration office. 16 and 17 year olds cannot vote in UK General Elections or the upcoming EU referendum on June 23.
