A man has been charged in connection with cyber fraud after a pensioner from Aberdeenshire was targeted online.

The 73-year-old woman fell victim to cyber-enabled fraud in October 2021, police said.

The man has been released for the time being, and will appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court at a later date.

It follows an investigation by Police Scotland’s north east Cyber-Enabled Crime Team, as part of Project Henhouse – a UK-wide campaign to tackle fraud.

Detective Sergeant David Williamson, of the team, said: “Criminals use internet-enabled technology to target vulnerable people.

“Police Scotland are committed to working with partners to prevent cyber-crime and to pursue individuals or groups who utilise technology for criminal purposes.

“If you have been a victim of a cyber-enabled crime or require crime prevention advice, please contact 101.”
